‘Sex and The City’ star Kim Cattrall, fashion icon Linda Evangelista and actress Sharon Stone on Saturday were among the celebrities attending Vienna’s Life Ball, a splashy gala that raises money to fight AIDS.The gala, held in Vienna’s historic city hall, is billed as Europe’s largest and most spectacular annual charity event dedicated to combating HIV and AIDS. Each year, it attracts thousands of revelers who dance the night away in outlandish oufits _ and often nothing more than body paint and glitter. This year was no different. With cameras rolling, partygoers wearing flamboyant wigs, hot pants, platform shoes and even pink lederhosen strutted their stuff down the red carpet as thousands of curious onlookers crowded around them to get a glimpse. The outdoor opening ceremony that followed was an eclectic mix of music, dance and fanfare. One highlight was a fashion show by Agent Provocateur, the racy underwear clothing label. Spotted on the catwalk were model Markus Schenkenberg and Austrian swimmer Markus Rogan, among others. The ceremony also had its serious moments.Stone, a representative of the American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR), a nonprofit organization dedicated to the support of HIV/AIDS research, urged people to stand up for themselves and others.«Words matter … we can’t end AIDS if we don’t stand up for our humanity,» Stone said.Cattrall, who presented a ¤100,000 (US$155,530) prize to CARE Austria for an HIV/AIDS project the group runs in Kenya, highlighted the need to protect children from the deadly disease.«I think that all of us coming together for such a wonderful cause and celebrating life tonight is the best answer because we must live on, we must live strong and we must save the next generation _ they are our hope, they are our future,» Cattrall said. Both Cattrall and Evangelista were first-time special guests at the gala, which in recent years has seen actress Catherine Deneuve and models Naomi Campbell and Nadja Auermann.Hours before the party started, Evangelista said her first agent died of AIDS in the early 1980s.«It was very, very, very tragic for me,» Evangelista told reporters at a Vienna hotel. «Since then, I can’t even tell you the number of friends and colleagues I’ve lost.Organizer Gery Keszler hopes this year’s ball will top last year’s ¤1.2 million (US$1.9 million) fundraising record. Proceeds will go to AIDS-related initiatives in Austria and abroad.During the opening ceremony, Austria’s culture minister presented Keszler with a medal for his efforts to promote tolerance.
